A Christmas Stocking with a Fun Surprise

One of my favorite things to create during the holidays is packaging that’s just as special as the gift inside—and this little stocking definitely fits the bill!

At first glance, it looks like an adorable Christmas stocking complete with a festive tag and holly embellishment. But here’s the surprise…

Open it up and you’ll find a good sized box tucked inside!

They’re the perfect size for:

  • Chocolates or wrapped candy
  • Gift cards
  • Small jewelry pieces
  • Lip balm or mini hand sanitizer
  • Cash gifts
  • Tiny craft supplies
  • Secret Santa surprises

I love projects like this because they’re unexpected. Instead of handing someone a traditional gift bag, you’re giving them something handmade that becomes part of the gift itself.

For this version, I chose classic Christmas colors with a plaid stocking front, bright red cardstock, a crisp white cuff, and a sweet little “To/From” tag. It’s simple, elegant, and easy to personalize with your favorite Designer Series Paper.

To make this, start with 2 pieces of Real Red card stock measuring 3 1/2″ x 5 1/2″. Score 1 piece of card stock at 1″ on all sides. Score the other piece at 15/16″ on all sides (that’s one tiny line before the 1-inch mark). Snip as shown in the video below and assemble both boxes. Adhere one to a stocking. Place the cover of the box on and smear some glue on top of that box. Then place the second stocking on top. Voila!

Whether you’re making one for a family member, teacher, coworker, or craft fair, this project is sure to bring a smile.

Question for you:
If you found one of these in your stocking, what would you hope was tucked inside? Let me know in the comments!
