Happy Birthday: A Fun Striped Birthday Card

Sometimes the simplest card designs make the biggest impact—and this birthday card is a perfect example!

I had so much fun creating this bold and colorful birthday card using a combination of bright Designer Series Paper, a big bold sentiment, and a little bit of ribbon. The result is a cheerful card that feels playful without being overly fussy.

The star of this card is definitely the oversized Happy Birthday sentiment. I love using a large greeting as the focal point of a card because it means you don’t need a lot of other embellishments to make the design stand out.

For this card, I paired the dark lettering with a white die-cut layer, which really helps the greeting pop against the colorful background.

I used colors from the Brights collection (Gorgeous Grape, Real Red, and Pretty Peacock). How about that striped DSP – it’s from the Painted Patterns 12″ x 12″ DSP pack:

Here’s the inside of the card:

The base of the card is a 5 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ piece of Thick Basic White with a 5 1/4″ x 4″ piece of DSP adhered to it. The fun opening is a piece of Thick Basic White that is 8 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ (scored at 4 1/4″) with a piece of 4″ x 3 1/4″ DSP adhered to that.

After adhering this little flap piece to the card base, I tied a piece of Fresh Freesia ribbon to the left side of it and made a bow. I finished the card with that great sentiment.

You could easily change the color combination to suit the recipient:

  • Pinks and purples for a pretty feminine birthday card
  • Blues and greens for a more masculine look
  • Bright rainbow colors for a fun and cheerful card
  • Soft pastels for a more subtle version
  • Your favorite Stampin’ Up! color combination for a completely customized look

I think the combination of the striped background, oversized greeting, and ribbon gives this card just the right balance of bold and pretty.

It’s proof that you don’t need lots of different elements to create a card that gets noticed. Sometimes a great color combination and a fabulous sentiment are all you need.
